WHERE THERE IS DARKNESS

An anecdote, again often attributed to that legend of Turkish wit and wisdom, Mullah Nasruddin, goes something like this; the Mullah was found keenly examining the ground in the glow of a street lamp late one night. A passerby asked him what he was looking for. “Oh,” said the Mullah, “I lost a silver coin!”

The friendly man joined in the search. After a while of fruitless effort, he asked the Mullah whether he remembered a little specifically where about he could have dropped the coin.

“In the compound of my hut,” Nasruddin was quick to reply!

Aghast, the friend asked the Mullah incredulously why he was wasting time looking there for something that he had lost elsewhere!

“Because, my friend, my hut is dark, and this place has light.”

Again, I maintain that Mullah Nasruddin was a wise person, and not likely to utter words in vain.
(See post ‘Praise The Moon’, December 2013)

Was the wise man trying to demonstrate so simply the humility required to perceive and accept the darkness inside us, and turn to Him who is the source of all light?

Do we need to stop living in the blind shadows of our egos, and step out to search for the treasures in the Light?

Are we stumbling around in the dark, so full of our own losses and gains that we do not venture out into the light that hides nothing?

May the good Lord give us the courage to free our souls enchained in the miserable abysses of our ambitions, desires and treacherous machinations, and let them soar towards the light that banishes all forms of Darkness!

May we turn our backs upon the dark and dreary, and fly towards Him who shines, Who leads as a kindly light!

May we surrender to the Light rather than cling to the darkness; till the Light and we are one, the darkness is banished, and we glow with His luminescence.

  1. To put it simply, Vineet, there's always a bright side even to the most hopeless situation, and worrying surely gets one nowhere!
So go forth into the world and glow!

    Dear Zeina Glo,

Recently, I went through some odd but, I dare say, heartwarming experiences which I'd like to share with your readers.

On our way back from Chandigarh to the farm, we stayed the night at my nephew's flat in Gurgaon. Laden with a lot of luggage and quite tired, we took the elevator up to the 11th floor, had dinner and went to bed. The next day, as we began to take our leave, I realized that my wallet was missing! We searched the flat thoroughly, went downstairs and looked in and around the car and even called up some relatives whom we'd visited en route the previous day to ask if they had seen the missing wallet. But all to no avail. . . . Disheartened, we moved off homewards, after I'd spent the better part of an hour getting my debit cards blocked by the bank. Where did I drop my wallet? By the car? On the stairs leading to the porch? In the elevator? Who could have taken it? The building's watchman? The car park attendant? Someone who found it in the elevator? Everyone was silent and brooding. My nephew, who was to celebrate his birthday that day, found it hard to enjoy the day.

Then, late in the evening, the security people, who we'd asked for help, called up to say that the missing wallet had been found. The good people who lived in flat no. 606, whose car had been parked adjacent to mine, saw the wallet lying by the door of my car, picked it up and handed it over to the building's welfare official, who, in turn, handed it over to the guard by the elevator. The guard, having completed his shift, handed the wallet to the person who relieved him at his post, to return to anyone who came to claim it. When, by the evening, no one had claimed the wallet, the day-shift guard returned it to the welfare official, who went through its contents and was able to establish the identity of its owner and make the call.

Our spirits soared! There were, after all, plenty of good people in this world, who were willing to go through considerable trouble to help others! The positive attitude of all the people involved in the 'lost and found' saga of my wallet really made this world seem like a good place to live in.

I'll continue the story of my experiences in another comment to this post.

  3. The good people in flat 606! They already had enough warmth and faith and love in their hearts to make the little effort required in returning to you your wallet and its contents; now they have your everlasting gratitude and good wishes too!
You not only got back your lost wallet and its contents, but a chance to feel thankful to God and some of his human creations, to feel affection for some soul you did not previously 'know'! You have felt the magic of a small act of caring and you have , no doubt, been inspired to do and share and encourage the spread of this epidemic of caring and compassion and thanks and wonder!
The Inner Glow! You have been touched! Praise be to Him who orchestrates!
