PRAISE THE MOON

An old joke that is often attributed to Mullah Nasruddin, the legend of Turkish wit and wisdom, goes like this; he is said to have been asked by a teacher as to which was more important, the sun or the moon, “The moon, of course!” The reason he gave was that the sun came only during the day when there was already enough light, while the moon shone at night and lit up the darkness!

The anecdote ends there, but it provides food for thought. The Mullah was a wise person, and not likely to utter words without a lesson, message or comment.

Come December, and one is infused with the Yuletide spirit or the Christmas spirit. The first half of the month sees a vast majority of students all over the world neck-deep in examinations, a whole lot of financial institutions, businesses and governments busy with their financial year coming to an end, and a world full of other such deadlines.

Christmas and New Year are, however, around the corner. The marketeers have already started bombarding one’s senses with what to buy to show how ‘giving’ we are, and how loving we are and how much we care. Toys, joys, gifts, visits hugs and love in all forms abound.…..

……for about two weeks in a year.

The same spirit is seen during different festival days in different cultures or different parts of the world. Would one be wrong in praying that God give us so many religions and cultures that every day of the year is Diwali or Ramazan or Christmas or some other ‘reason’ for being kind and caring and joyful and giving and loving?

Mullah Nasruddin was right.

Praise All! The moon that shines when the night is dark!

Praise All! Those who love and care even when the ‘season’ does not demand it or the advertisers don’t push it down their throats!

Praise All! Whose celebration of the Being of the Lord, or the Victory of Good over Evil, or The Revelation of His Word, is not dependent upon calendar dates!

Praise All! For whom each day is a day gifted by God by any name to be good and to love and rejoice in His Name!

Praise the Moon!

Praise the inner glow, born out of inner peace, inner health, inner beauty, inner rejoicing, inner thanks! Praise the Inner World that holds the answer to all the questions outside.

  1. This is amazing! Its like saying a single candle is much more important to a man in darkness than a bright, over the top sun and a kind word from a friend is much more treasured in times of trouble than a million words of flattery during a time of success. This is profound, thanks Zeina Glo!
