EVOLUTION

The outstanding achievement, the single achievement, the only achievement, is happiness; happiness not as in frenzied jumping around and shouting from the ramparts; happiness as in bliss.

We so often use the phrase ‘blissfully unaware’; we concentrate on the ‘unaware’ because we ourselves are not aware of the ‘blissfully’!

Which creatures on earth have we seen playing with abandon? Monkeys, squirrels, birds and animals of all sorts, children at an age when they are ‘carefree’, young adults when they are together in an age group where one-upmanship does not matter, old people who are seeing everything slipping and are happy for the moment at hand?

The rest of the world is busy ACHIEVING; achieving worries, tensions, targets, desires, depressions, enmities, jealousies, competition, strength, power, riches, money and what–have-you.

And in the middle of it all, a little virus gets one, or one falls asleep behind a wheel, or there is water on a polished floor. And ‘pop’! The dreams and achievements are downsized, if not erased! Suddenly, it’s an achievement to eat a spoonful of soup without dribbling, or to speak one coherent word.

I have nothing against doctors and engineers and builders and scientists and traders and teachers and the world at large, as long as the aim of their study and effort is to be of help, to ease things, to make someone happy, to reach out physically, mentally and spiritually into realms yet unknown or long forgotten, to come closer to the Truth. Blessed are they that can aim for the fun and joy of creating, for working in closer unison with the hum of the universe, for realising new possibilities, for widening horizons, for rejoicing in what can be.

But if the opportunity and effort are wasted on ‘earning’ money by fleecing the ‘underprivileged’, thriving on other people’s disease and discomfort, being too full of oneself to recognize a blessing and share it, then one would be better off without the ‘education’, ‘position’, ‘wealth’ and ‘achievement’.

Progressing towards unhappiness is not evolution; advancing towards bliss is evolution. Efforts driven by insecurity will never achieve their goal. Efforts made with faith in the plan of the Master, secure in the knowledge that bliss awaits us whenever we choose to turn towards it, yet performing every earthly task with a detached verve, are worthy efforts.

The trouble lies in the mirror, where the picture in front looms so large that the background is hidden and the even floor one stands on is often not seen.

We are most harsh in judging and punishing ourselves. We are convinced that it is wrong to accept our ‘mistakes’, get over our ‘failures’ and welcome happiness; instead, we choose to dwell upon the past, we worry about the future and ruin the present. The Present, the Gift.

The reflection in the mirror does not let us trust in God. It does not let us accept that this person is part of a Master plan, and Eternal Process called Life or God or Nature or Soul or Nirvana or existence or Truth or Beauty or Love!

We must trust! Have faith! Be sure that The Big I plans and executes nothing! Trust in God, and then let life come at us while we play secure in our Father’s lap, or garden or fields or world!

Evolution has to make us all happier, more at peace with ourselves, more forgiving, more loving, more trustful, more blissful.

Let us evolve!

THE LAST FRONTIER

Finally it boils down to this: the challenge is to love, the goal is to love, the aim is to love.

Every human and animal and plant and tree and stone goes through the motions of like and dislike and acceptance and resistance, till winds and waves and heat and cold and age reduce it to nothing. Blessed is the tree that understands the wind, blessed is the stone that loves the crashing waves, blessed are the animals that do not question, blessed are the humans who understand the need for everyone’s being and so feel compassion for all.

The blessing is to recognise and understand that no individual acts on his own, that there IS no individual; that each one is a part of a bigger concept called God; that this God or Soul or Aatmaa or Entity stretches from infinity to infinity in terms of time, space, thought and dimension.

The craving of every being is to finally understand, accept and acknowledge that whatever will be, will be; that everything imaginable, or otherwise, does happen.

The so called ‘good’ and ‘bad’ are dependent upon each other for definition and will always co-exist. We just have to understand and accept. The terms are subjective anyway; my fault is always more easily excusable than the other person’s!

Good and evil will always compete and fight. But it is nothing personal. It is something like the way we enjoy delicious food that tingles the buds; it is so pleasing, yet it goes hand in hand with each one’s private darkness and of foul smells and excreta. But when accepted with grace, they all become normal functions of natural existence.

The acceptance of the imminence of all that is going to happen provides relief from worry, guilt and blame. It cuts down to size the big ‘I’ and elevates ‘Him’ who is the planner and the executor.

One’s own shortcomings become easier to bear. Appreciation of what one has dawns upon the mind. One learns to forgive oneself. The worry lines on the forehead start smoothening out.

As one learns to forgive or accept oneself, so the feeling of compassion for others creeps in. The only way to accept someone else’s mistakes is by being able to face and forgive one’s own.

The day we realise that each creature is following its own destiny, including humankind, we are all set for love.

DO UNTO YOURSELF

Do unto yourself as you would be seen doing unto others. All the proclamations of piety, the claims of compassion, the façades of forgiveness; must fall clear upon the eye turned inward, upon the purity deep inside your own self.

It is of no consequence how well you seem to judge people; you can only rely on your limited field of experience. It is of no value that you show much love and caring if somewhere inside you are counting the returns on your investment.

Forgive completely. Do not just forgive enough to convince yourself of your magnanimity. Once forgiven, the original sin should lose entity entirely.

It’s like when you've watched something dirty on a shared computer. After you’re done, the original sin should not be traceable. You don’t ‘Delete’ something and leave it in the ‘Recycle Bin’ to be ‘restored’ at will. No, you first Delete and send it to the Recycle Bin, then you ‘Delete Forever’ or ‘Empty the Recycle Bin’. But there are too many logs and nets and webs and paths, so you then go for the ‘Search’ button, and fill in relevant words of what you wish to erase from memory; and you watch in surprise as the little doggy wags its tail and files that contain a reference to your ‘wrong’ keep popping up. Then you Delete all these files, and Empty the Recycle Bin.

Forgive like that, completely; leaving no chance of retracting.

Freedom lies in Forgiveness. Pick out the original sin from each nook and cranny and remote crevice of your being; if it refuses to come out, ‘Quarantine’ it, refuse to look at it, close off all access to it, and in due course of time it will be Deleted automatically. The sin, the sinner, the hurt, the grief must not get pride of place in your being.

We are wronged till the day we choose to keep suffering from the wrong. The perpetrator is happy in his own world - or maybe not so happy - but our inner suffering makes no difference to him; unless he can observe it and glean a feeling of satisfaction at having brought it about.

Being free with forgiveness brings upon one the virtue of the saints; compassion, even for the tormentor. When forgiveness becomes so much a part of one’s habit, compassion enters the heart. And the world is full of creatures whom one can feel for.

THE MIST THAT COVERS ALL

“Do you want you see the lake grow larger?” asks my son.

“Hmm?”

“Keep watching! When the mist covers the mountains and you can’t see the other side of the lake, it becomes larger; it can even stretch to infinity!”

One has been watching this lake for fifty years now, it is about a thousand yards long and three hundred to four hundred yards wide, bending gently to curve into a bean shape. This is the first time that one has been able to stretch its shores as far as one likes. The mist has always been fascinating. Scores of times one has been rowing a boat when all is enveloped by the mist - now ethereal wisps of glaring bright, now brooding clouds laden with moisture. But the thought in one’s mind has always been that one knows the lake too well to be fooled by the mist, and the shores are nearby, exactly where they should be.

One knows! One can define…

...till a 19 year old boy shows how the shores of this little lake can be stretched till infinity.

……………………………………………………………………..

The mist rolls; a tumbling mass of endless whiteness, sometimes rising lightly, sometimes drooping and bending under the weight of the water it bears. It wets the walls and darkens the corridors of the old school buildings. It brings gentleness into the voices of the teachers - scolding men and shrieking women – and it dampens the screams and shouts of the children. It brings a sense of peace, this shroud of mist; it softens the edges, it rounds off corners, everyone walks a bit slower and talks a little softly, as if in a place where one must be quiet. One opens a bedroom window to welcome the rolling cloud deeper into one’s life.

The smoke-like wisps that rise on a sunny day from the valleys and skim over the tops carry hope and cheer and promise, but the mist that engulfs deeply brings satisfaction and wholeness and peace and quiet. Maybe because it restricts the visual domain while still retaining the light, an inner glow; the fears of the unknown dark are absent, but the shroud that limits the impression of vision is very much present, benign and enjoyable.

………………………………………………………………………

The tangible, the audible, the visible, the thinkable, the imaginable, are all being shrouded in a benign mist. It rolls and flows, and smoothens the sharpness. It dampens noises. It absorbs jolts. It gently swathes imaginings.

This mist is called the Name of God; and the shores of definition stretch to touch infinity.

My dear friend Ravi wanted me to write about the mist. I am grateful to god for him.

DARJEELING CENTRAL JAIL

A lush green hillside; pines behind and a grassy slope extending ahead. A narrow path winding its way along the hill some metres behind where four young men sat. A breathtaking view of gently rolling mountains as far as the eye could see. The slope in front running down to a square walled structure in the distance; an aerial view of the Darjeeling Central Jail, which had housed some famous people during the country’s struggle for freedom from foreign rule…

Four friends barely in their twenties, on a holiday just after graduating from college, enjoying a last trip together before life would take them their separate ways. They walked a lot, they talked a lot, they laughed a lot, they wondered a lot; about things like the jail in the mountains below where they sat. Somehow in this picturesque setting, it did not look very grotesque, from outside.

A softly warm sun. The drone of summer insects. A cool breeze. Friendly banter. Lazy stretches and yawns.

A pleasant tinkle of children’s voices. The boys glance back to see them passing along the path, and they are transfixed!

Two little girls, oh so beautiful!

Hearts swell and rise in prayer. Blessings. Good wishes. Prana.

An entreaty, “God grant them every happiness; if there is any dearth in their share, give them some from mine…”

Shakti would remember.

……………………………………………………………………

And so it was on many occasions, for years to come; the wondrous beauty of a young woman, the deeply etched face of an old man, a lad not yet in his teens carrying a load of stones from a riverbed, a young bride, workers sweating in the fields in the afternoon sun, a legless beggar woman with a happy face dragging herself on a wooden plank mounted on old ball bearings, a boy writhing in pain in a hospital, a choir of schoolgirls raising their voices in a high soprano….. So it was on many occasions, for years to come; an invocation would rise from the depths of the heart, “God grant them every happiness; if there is any dearth in their share, give them some from mine…”

The joy of the visions was enriching enough in itself. God could take a bit from all the bounties he had bestowed and there would still be enough, for this moment had been so wholesome in itself. Every time, the experience was poignant enough for a lifetime, complete in its wonder, whole in its thanks.

-----------------------------------------------------------

The years kept passing, the prana kept flowing.

Adversity reared its frightening head many a time, seemingly abundant and ever growing.

The mind started playing tricks; could God have taken the prayers seriously and taken away from the share of joys to give to those whom it was wished upon? Could it be taken literally? Shouldn’t there be rewards for those who sent forth such prayers and blessings?

The hope of reward left a sense of guilt; self-doubts somewhat diluted the fun of exuberant giving. The blesser’s own share of the joys and comforts seemed to be depleting, and wishing away out of one’s share seemed a bit scary – what if God granted each wish at face value?

Troubles, hardships, debts, doubts, illnesses, tensions, stress of all kinds; have a life of their own, and are in constant conflict with contentment and happiness.

The prana flowed lesser.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Yet, every now and then, something would overwhelm and bring tears of wonder and thanksgiving to the eyes. It just could not be helped. When such a moment arrives, it is so strong that doubts and caution have to be thrown to the wind; the joy, the life, the fun in the moment, are overwhelming. God abounds. Blessings pour.

Prana flows.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Bless on, dear heart! For all that you ever owned was what you gave away. That includes love and affection, and hatred and ill-wishes, goodness and blessings, compassion and care, time and effort, joys and fun, smiles, good wishes, and a whole lot of tangible things, like money and ‘belongings’.

And it does bounce back; does one know the amount of ills that lay in store for one otherwise….

MY CUP OVERFLOWS - III

The beauty of your thoughts adorns my stories. My words of appreciation and gratitude are inadequate, so once again, I reproduce some of your words, my dear readers, as a post that all may share.

…most times, we do pray out of a sense of insecurity and fear or a foreboding about the future. . . and we do go overboard in our demands but the Giver, in His wisdom, decides which of our prayers He should answer and which are better ignored!...

Do you think we all have the image of the almighty within us? If so, when we take wrong decisions in life, who is at work? We? Or the almighty?

I think every post, I think this whole story is about addressing the issues you put forward! Go at it!!
Go for Faith, Truth, Perfection, One! Throw away guilt, throw away "I". Discern between right and wrong, and thank Him, smile with Him in His conspiracy in using you to make the world Perfect, with its correct measure of right and wrong. Thank Him for giving you the suffering which could well have gone to your mother or daughter.

You will see the suffering losing its pain and the unhappiness losing its vivid colours!

Conspire with Him! Be One with Him! Forego the I ! And then it's just you and Daddy going through a tough time together, and He wants to ease it for you, while at the same time relying on your youthful strength; and you want to ease the pressure on Him, all the time having full Faith on His judgement!

Let the thoughts flow. FEEL IT !!

You are oh so close!

'...the image of the almighty...'

Oh it's all ONE !

Is it that simple? How does one meditate to shrug off years of negative energy? Does the mind calm down enough to think rationally?

How does one stop the fight within? Will it be answered in the post as well?

You say Allah is Perfect and Perfection is only for Allah. . . . I find that a welcome and plausible explanation for the existence of an entity called God, who has different names for different people - Allah, God, Ishwar, Waheguru, etc.

There would be many, like me, who do not believe God exists. This concept of a perfect being, however, could be accepted as God by another name or rather, a nameless God.

It would mean that every species in the universe is striving, in its own way, to achieve perfection and that perfection, which all of us aim to achieve but which, by definition, can never be achieved, is what we can call God.

God, then, would be the most beautiful, powerful, strong, intelligent, healthy, kind, gentle (plus all other desirable qualities) creature in the entire universe. No wonder everyone worships God and a prays to God for help in all situations or thanks God for all his blessings!

Yes, God does exist, after all, but only as a concept, an ultimate aim, an omnipresent, omnipotent, omniscient, Almighty entity we all imagine we could one day become if we put in enough effort. . .

Good seed for thought you provided. Even Charles Darwin would agree.

Insightful post Zeina and yes, it answers my earlier query... if I am the Almighty and He is Me, then there is no I...
More Rumi....
"Why should I seek? I am the same as
he. His essence speaks through me.
I have been looking for myself!"

PINDARI - 2

DEATH WISH

(This post is a continuation of the previous one, PINDARI - 1)

We are close to the eternal snows. The wonder of it is embedded deeply in our hearts and minds. There is a waterfall in every nook in the mountains. One looks like the beard of a Japanese sensei, another like the flowing white of Guru Nanak. One is a mere wisp of spray flying downwards, another could form a sizeable stream itself.

This whole stretch of the Himalayas has been named 'Dev Bhoomi' by the populace. It means Land of the Gods. So many of the
deities in the Indian tradition have their abodes high up in these mountains.

The Presence of the Master is tangible. Here is the source of sustenance to all forms of life down there. His handiwork overwhelms. One would not mind just laying down forever over here, drawn into His World. The promise of Paradise seems real; if we could just keep walking up, and up, and up, higher and higher over the Eternal Snows…. Or just lie down here, at Phurkia.

We find a clear pool of sub-zero water and bathe. The madness is upon all of us!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The early morning takes us through flocks of sheep guarded by fierce dogs that have to be tied up before we approach, lest they tear up Kaalu or some of us. Grassy meadows sprawl on both sides of the river. Sheep dot the slopes on the far side. Some ponies have been left to roam, to be gathered again after the coming monsoon; three months of torrential rain.

The distant snows are now very close. We walk over patches of ice with water flowing beneath them. Slipping would mean sliding down to the river 500 metres below. The waterfalls are now not even mindful of the folds between ridges; they just appear anywhere and fly down the mountain.

In an ancient tale five brothers had walked up such mountains in these ranges at the end of their earthly endeavours. A dog had accompanied them. They kept climbing up, heavenwards. One by one, the four younger ones fell to the perils along the way, or maybe tests set up by the powers-that-be. The eldest reached the gates of heaven and was asked to enter. He said that if he deserved to enter, the dog did, too, for it had faced all that he had. God appeared from the form of the dog and allowed him in! This was the final test.

Most of us wanted to take Kaalu home with us, but no one could think of depriving him of this piece of heaven.

Flowery surprises! Rose bushes almost ten feet high, with the truest pink roses one has ever seen! Rhododendrons flowers violet and white in colour!

A ‘ghural’ (mountain goat) basking in the sun beside a fall of water that disappears into a hole in the mountain, only to emerge some distance lower and join the river, the children’s constant joshing a bit subdued now as cameras click and hearts lose identity as they dissolve in the beauty, the snow covered peaks looming large, the glacier just some minutes away; one loses all perspective of the things that have kept one busy or worried or labouring for decades; this is the closest to Paradise one has ever been. The plants and meadows and falls and river and snow, the children walking along with awe on their countenances, the guides who have brought us up so patiently, and two brothers with 50 years to look back over; the lines fade and blur and the world loses the form we have always known it to have.

A story read forty years ago comes to mind; ‘Chang’; a gentle, touching tale about The Place Where Elephants Go To Die.

These are not thoughts of sadness or defeat; they are feelings of bliss, dissolution, oneness, anand.

We follow the last stretch of river to reach the tip of the glacier, a gigantic mass of ice as black as any of the surrounding rocks. But with a few hundred metres to go, we must cross one of two fast flowing streams that tumble down rapidly and unite to form the Pindar.

For almost an hour we search up and down for a likely crossing place, because we are too near the glacier to turn back without atleast touching it. At last we decide to take a chance at a place where the water is split into three smaller parts and the stream flows a bit wider. We hesitantly look at Judde Tayaji, elder brother, responsible one, Rock of Ages, and in his eyes we see permission to go ahead; we haven’t come all this way to turn back without meeting the Pindari Glacier!

Alok and I go first and help everyone across one flow of water, then the second. The third flow is fast and huge. He steps in and then turns away a bit to let me go ahead. Our lower limbs are freezing, the rush of the water makes everything seem to flow in different directions. Alok’s grip is firm as I hold on to him and step forward. The current would sweep me away if I do not first let my body adjust to balance against it like one would bend against the wind in a storm. One step forward, foot firmly ensconced in the bed, shift of weight; second foot forward…. A couple of more steps and I can leave Alok’s outstretched hand and make a small lunge for a rock in the stream, at the same time dropping on one knee towards the rock. The others think I'm slipping or losing balance, but I have to have the extra purchase of my knee as I reach out and hug the rock.

Alok and I form anchors. We face upstream, and care not for what lies behind as the Pindar rages a few metres behind our backs. The others cross one by one, holding on to us as required. Dear Naba gives herself up to us and goes limp in the water as we pull and push her across. The first crossing leaves us planted rock steady in the ice cold water for half an hour.

We have forbidden the children to take photos or make videos of the crossing, or the folks back home will be angry!

The sun is climbing higher, and we fear that the flow of the stream will increase rapidly as the ice melts faster. Alok decides to stay on his side of the crossing while we visit the glacier and return, lest it become too difficult to cross over and provide an anchor on our way back.

A sprint to the mouth of the Pindari Glacier, wonder at its monstrous bulk and form, at the continuous rivulets of mud and stone slithering down at the sides of the snout, some pictures, and a rush back to the stream where our guide waits patiently; the process takes up almost an hour.

We cross back in the same manner, taking much lesser time.

Then we stand to attention with the stream and glacier at our back and sing the song of the school most of us studied in, followed by the national anthem of India.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We descend to our cars in two days. Afzal promises to build a dwelling on the slopes just before the Glacier.

I am not really very well; I've lost my appetite and am finding difficulty in walking. Jannat forces me to eat. Jashan falls in beside me and takes me down at a good pace, for which father can be weak before his little girl!

We meet a man driving a small flock of sheep up the path. We greet him and he compliments us on having gone up. He tells us that he too has a job in Ghaziabad, a huge, crowded, bustling, unsafe city adjoining Delhi, but he likes to come back home because “my village is more beautiful than heaven!”

Jashan and I agree.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Judda and I have come back with a deep feeling of fulfilment, secure in the knowledge that the young men and women who went with us have broad shoulders and strong minds, that they feel compassion, that they can help, that they value fun, that they can bear the weight of all the ills that will befall them, that they can shoulder responsibility, that they will ford all the rivers that they have to, and come out shining on the other side.

We are all back at our places of work or study or whatever life has in store for us. But we have felt the gentle breeze of Paradise in our hearts, the Eternal Snows loom large if we close our eyes, we have dissolved once into the miracle of the falling waters.

As for me, I have felt the need to die every moment, and make way for life yet to come, to live anew each hour and let the ghosts of the past bury themselves. I face upstream, and care not for what lies behind as a river rages a few metres behind my back.
